Users of the North-South leg of Highway 2000 can now enjoy greater convenience, thanks to the launch of a new online Epass top-up platform by Jamaica North-South Highway Company Limited (JNSHC). This digital upgrade allows drivers to manage toll payments online via mobile app or web portal, reducing reliance on physical toll booths.
The initiative follows collaboration between JNSHC and the Government of Jamaica through the National Road Operating and Constructing Company Limited (NROCC).
A Step Toward Smarter Infrastructure
Speaking on the launch, Minister Without Portfolio Robert Morgan highlighted that this move is part of a broader modernization effort.
“JNSHC’s expansion into the digital space forms part of a broader national push to modernise Jamaica’s toll road infrastructure. The Government’s long-term goal is to implement Open Road Tolling across all toll roads, so users will not have to stop at a toll booth to pay tolls,” said Morgan.
The online platform marks a major leap forward in achieving this vision, setting the groundwork for Open Road Tolling, a system where tolls are collected electronically as vehicles pass through designated points without stopping.
Key Features of the New EPASS System
Drivers using the North-South highway, which connects Kingston to Ocho Rios, will now be able to:
-
Top up Epass accounts online
-
View travel and top-up history
-
Check account balances and vehicle details
-
Track real-time usage data
The system is expected to be fully operational for public use before the end of Q3 2025.
More Digital Solutions on the Horizon
Highway 2000’s East-West corridor, connecting Kingston to Clarendon and Portmore, is operated by a separate company, TransJam Highways, but is also expected to integrate similar digital capabilities in the future.
The rollout of online tolling services aligns with Jamaica’s Vision 2030 plan to digitize key infrastructure and improve national transportation efficiency.
Our Opinion
This move by JNSHC is more than just a tech update — it’s a signal that Jamaica’s road network is entering a new era. Online tolling not only saves time for drivers but also builds transparency, reduces cash handling, and supports safer, more seamless travel. As the island continues to grow, embracing smart transportation tools like these is key to sustaining development and boosting economic flow between north and south.
