The MasterMac Group of Companies, one of Jamaica’s leading wholesale and retail distributors, has officially opened its newest outlet, the MasterMac Food Store, on Constant Spring Road in St Andrew. The new branch represents a major milestone in the company’s continued growth and modernization of its operations across the island.
Key Details
The launch ceremony, held on Thursday, October 16, brought together the company’s management, staff, suppliers, customers, and members of the media to celebrate the opening of the new facility.
This latest addition comes 36 years after the company opened its first location in downtown Kingston in 1988. Since then, MasterMac has expanded to 15 locations across Jamaica, including five wholesale distribution centers and five supermarkets.
The new Constant Spring Road location includes both the MasterMac Food Store and the MasterMac Supercentre, marking the completion of a four-year project that combined design, construction, and strategic planning.
According to Managing Director Raymond McMaster, the new branch embodies the company’s mission to continually improve its facilities and customer experience. “Everyone that we build, or when we’re expanding, is always a better one. So we keep learning from the previous one and we try and improve on it by building a better and more modern facility,” he explained.
McMaster confirmed that this new store is now the company’s largest supermarket to date.
Background
Founded in 1988, the MasterMac Group of Companies began as a single outlet in downtown Kingston. Over the decades, it has evolved into one of Jamaica’s most trusted food distribution and retail brands, known for combining affordability, quality, and reliability.
The company serves a wide range of customers, from individual shoppers to large-scale caterers and restaurant owners. With its focus on wholesale distribution, MasterMac continues to play a key role in supplying goods to small and medium-sized businesses throughout the island.
McMaster noted that the group’s supermarkets also act as important contact points for its broader distribution operations. “We cater to large-scale caterers, small business owners—you name it, you can get from one pound to 10,000 pounds, even a container,” he said. “We are predominantly strong in wholesale, and that’s our core market. So, we’re actually stronger there than on the retail end.”
New Location Features
The Constant Spring Road location introduces several upgrades over previous stores. In addition to a modern layout and expanded floor space, it features an in-house deli and bakery, offering freshly prepared meals and baked goods—amenities not available at other MasterMac outlets.
The company’s e-commerce platform, www.mastermacfood.com, is also integrated into this new location, allowing customers to shop online at in-store prices, with both pickup and delivery options available locally and internationally.
The property’s location was a strategic decision. McMaster said the land had been idle for years but offered ideal accessibility due to its proximity to key roads such as Dunrobin Avenue, Mannings Hill Road, Shortwood Road, and Grants Pen Avenue.
“When we look at the surrounding area, we thought to ourselves that it would be ideal for a supermarket, and we’re in the food business. So, based on that, that’s how the idea was born, and we are here today,” McMaster stated.
Construction Challenges
McMaster revealed that the construction process was not without its challenges. The project began during the COVID-19 pandemic, a period marked by disruptions in the global supply chain, rising material costs, and inflationary pressures.
He admitted that the final cost of the project exceeded the original budget and that he eventually “lost count” of the total expenditure. “If you understand construction, we get a bill of quantities based on a drawing, and when the construction period starts, year after year, you have salaries going up, material raised, and then you have changes,” McMaster explained. “When you start, you say, ‘Oh, no! That’s not going to work.’ So you have to change. So I have lost count, and it’s more peaceful now.”
Family and Leadership
The ribbon-cutting ceremony featured Raymond and Wendy McMaster—the company’s founders—accompanied by their five children, symbolizing the family’s continued leadership in the business.
The McMasters’ commitment to innovation and long-term growth has positioned the company as a major force in Jamaica’s retail and wholesale food sector.
Analysis
The opening of the new Constant Spring Road branch underscores the resilience of Jamaica’s private sector, especially amid economic pressures from the pandemic. MasterMac’s expansion demonstrates how locally owned, family-run companies can successfully scale operations while maintaining strong community ties.
By embracing modern retail infrastructure and integrating digital solutions such as e-commerce, MasterMac continues to strengthen its market position against regional and international competitors.
Our Opinion
The MasterMac Group’s new Constant Spring location represents not only a business expansion but also a reflection of the company’s long-term commitment to customer satisfaction and economic growth. As Jamaica’s retail landscape evolves, MasterMac’s model—combining family ownership, local investment, and innovation—serves as a strong example of sustainable entrepreneurship.
